Where does the energy for cellular respiration come from?

In cellular respiration, glucose is oxidized and electrons are released from it repeatedly, and stored in NADH. Does the energy come from this? I thought it came from the chemiosmotic gradient (when electrons are in the transport chain, H+ diffuses into the cell)
